Der Geist Unserer Zeit (after Dada sculpture by Raoul Hausmann) is a reaction to my first impression living in Switzerland. The project as a whole addresses issues of migration connected to human processes of transformation, transition and translation. It follows the concept of ‘Cultural Displacement’ and deals with immigration and cultural shock in its early stages, when contrasts between the native and new land are a constant, and the “new home’s” ways of life are understood under parameters of the previous place. Old paradigms manifest, new ones are created. It’s a process of loss and gain, learn and forget.
Traditions, language and the Swiss culture are translated through my alien filter, where they are misinterpreted or perhaps, completely misunderstood. In the process of cultural transition, I became aware that the condition of the immigrant is in many ways, a condition of ignorance that allows space for the appropriation of ideas, objects and symbols to purposely transform into what self perception gets hold of.
